GS Halligan (Dental Laboratory) Ltd

GS Halligan (Dental Laboratory) is a well-established laboratory serving NHS and private dental surgeons in the Midlands region. The business, which has been located at its current premises in Harborne, Birmingham since 1987, has been operating successfully for 32 years.

This is quite an achievement, considering the competitive nature of the industry and the advances in dental technology which have been accelerating at an astonishing pace. On the other hand, Geoff Halligan, who qualified as a dental technician in 1974, has always been energised by challenge and excited about the future. He has been a Straumann Approved Technician with particular expertise in reconstruction work design and dental implantology since 1994 and is Platinum Approved. He is also a skilful manager and communicator as well as an expert witness for the General Dental Council.

Geoff decided to become a dental technician because he liked the idea of a career that combined engineering and artistry. He gained his Dental Technician Certificate at Matthew Boulton College in 1974, his Advanced Certificate in Dental Ceramics and Crown and Bridge Work in 1976 and has attended many industry-led training courses since then. Geoff learned as much as he could as an employed technician and, when he felt he could progress no further, set up on his own. His vision was to develop a small laboratory that would deliver exceptional customer service and superior product quality and operate at the forefront of technological innovation.

These days GS Halligan employs five registered technicians, one trainee technician and a model maker. The technical team are assisted by support staff that provide reception, collection and delivery services and help administer the Dental Appliance Manufacturers Audit Scheme (DAMAS), a quality management system which is operated by the Dental Laboratory Association (DLA). Many in the team have been at GS Halligan for well over two decades and many of the laboratory’s loyal customers have become friends. Because the technicians continuously update their skills, knowledge and competence in the latest proven technologies, they are able to offer valuable support to dentists with case planning, diagnostic wax ups, shade taking and fitting. Geoff and other members of his team often visit customers’ surgeries and attend patient consultations.

This is where being a member of Terec really helps. Terec members, who are amongst the UK’s leading independent laboratories, organise meetings, training seminars and visits abroad to learn about new equipment, materials, processes and trends. Terec members are trusted colleagues that collaborate on equipment trials, develop and share marketing resources and help each other with technical challenges. Terec meetings often take place in the laboratory’s training room, which is linked to an adjoining fully equipped dental surgery that has mainly been used for dentist training and shade taking.

The GS Halligan building also includes a spacious open plan crown, bridge and implant laboratory, and rooms for model making and casting. GS Halligan’s digital laboratory has been relocated to neighbouring Halesowen, where Geoff has set up a separate milling centre, now known as Zfx Birmingham, equipped with a Zfx Scan 3 high quality optical scanner, a state of the art Zfx Evolution scanner and a Primacon high precision CNC milling machine.

Geoff believes that consumer demand for aesthetic dentistry will continue to increase as treatments become more affordable, and GS Halligan is in an ideal position to help meet this demand. Its spacious and stylish dental surgery is being transformed into a smile design centre. In a spa-like environment of comfort and calm, dentists can conduct patient consultations and perform treatments with assistance from experienced technicians, while their patients relax and look forward to superb results.

Geoff Halligan has no doubt that advances in dental technology will continue transform the dental industry and he remains, as ever, energised by the challenge and excited about the future.
